Carbon County, Utah

Wellington is one of several communities in Carbon County, the coal-country heart of east-central Utah. Understanding the county helps put Wellington in context - its economy, its landscape and the attractions that draw visitors to this corner of the state.
Coal-country history
Carbon County was established in 1894 and named for carbon - a nod to the coal that defined it. Mining boomed along the Price River after the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad arrived in 1883, and the industry shaped the county's towns, culture and union heritage. Energy is still central today: Carbon County remains one of Utah's leading natural-gas producers.
Geography and landscape
Spanning about 1,485 square miles, the county is framed by the Book Cliffs to the north and northeast, the Wasatch Range to the west, and the Green River along its eastern edge. The Price River runs through its center past Wellington, and Monument Peak tops the county at 10,452 feet. It's a land of canyons, high desert and mountains.
Towns and county seat
Price is the county seat and largest city, home to Utah State University Eastern and the USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum.
