About Wellington, Utah

Wellington is a small city in Carbon County, in east-central Utah, sitting along U.S. Routes 6 and 191 just six miles southeast of Price, the county seat. With a population of roughly 1,600, it is a quiet, close-knit community with deep roots in the region's coal-mining and ranching heritage - and easy access to the canyon country that surrounds it.
A brief history of Wellington
Wellington was settled in 1878 by a small group of Mormon pioneers led by Jefferson Tidwell, and it was named after Justus Wellington Seeley Jr. of the early Emery County court. The town grew as coal mining took off across Carbon County, spurred by the arrival of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, and farming and ranching along the Price River rounded out the local economy. A reminder of those early days, a historic cabin built in 1882, still stands in Wellington City Park.
Wellington today
Modern Wellington covers about five square miles at an elevation of roughly 5,387 feet, north of the Price River. The 2020 census counted 1,605 residents. Many locals work in the area's coal mines and energy industry or commute the short distance to Price. Children attend elementary school in Wellington and middle and high school in Price as part of the Carbon School District. The climate is high-desert continental, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters.
Location and getting around
